About IIT Kharagpur
The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur which is located at West Bengal was established in the year 1951. The institute was started to train scientist and engineers after India attained Independence in the year 1947. Comparing to all the IIT’s, IIT Kharagpur has the largest campus. It has the most number of departments and the largest number of students.
The 1ST IIT was born in May 1950 in Hijli, Kharagpur, in the eastern part of India. At the beginning, the IIT started operating from 5, Esplanade East, Calcutta and very soon moved to Hijli in September 1950. Before the formal inauguration of the institute the current name’ Indian Institute of Technology’ was adopted on 18th August 1951, by Maulana Abul Kalam Azad.
There is a common Visitor and the IIT Council for all the IIT’s. The Board of Governor is directed by IIT Council which also has the total of 13 members in addition to it there are other members appointed by the IIT Council and the institute’s Senate. Next, comes the Institute directors who are coming under Board of Governor, serves as the chief academic and executive officer of IIT. He is assisted by the deputy director. Next is the Dean, heads of departments, registrar, president of the students’ council, and chairman of the hall management committee, they all are under the institute director and the deputy director. The faculties are headed by hods. The warden comes under the chairman of hall management in the institute.
IIT Kharagpur is the second best college in India in terms of Placement. International placements are also included in this Campus. It was initiated in the year 2006.
